late this summer, i plan to buy a new ruger mini 30(wood stock) in 7.62x39. when it comes time i can't shoot my big bores, it will be my close-in(100 yards and less) deer gun. now i don't want the mini 30 to be an "ammo dump". i'll reload everything, cast or jacketed bullets, never a fmj, i don't like them. i think i'll buy a 150gr sst and/or a 150+gr fn gc cast boolit. it will be scoped with a 2-7x or 3-9x leupold. i'm planning on going 2 - 3" at 100 yards, 3 - 5 shots.
what do you all think?
i don't like the ar's and ak's and the sks. i've shot them(US Army) and to be frank, they aren't a hunting rifle. i know most of you like the ar, ak and sks and you use them well. thats good, but in my mind, they aren't.

I do not care for ARs. Sure that's not popular, but it's the way it is.
I also opted for a mini 30, but in 300 Blackout. The straight cartridge just feeds better to me.
Do have the 7.62x39 in a Ruger #1...

while I don't shoot them often, I have several 7.62 X 39's... the CZ bolt action carbine is definitely my favorite... but I also have a monte carlo stocked SKS, that was accurized... flash hider removed, barrel recrowned, bayonet lug removed, tech sights aperture rear sight & front sight... moving the rear sight back, greatly increases the sight radius... it actually started out as one of those $89.00 Chinese SKS's but it's now a 10 round stripper clip 1 MOA rifle, even with most of the cheap stuff... this after I 1st built it, with the 20 round box... but slight unreliability, caused me to put the factory 10 rounder back in... now it's rock solid reliable ( have a couple 5 round magazine for states that have restrictions ) if I had a Ruger laying around, I'd have accurized that... I hear the older ones wandered as they got hot, but the newer ones are better... but then if the 1st shot is on target... for hunting... what more do you need

I'm with ya Todd, won't own an AR, carried them in VN and they felt like a toy to me. Just don't trip my trigger, to each his own. I do have a couple Mini-14s in 222 and 6.8, an M1 Garand and M1 carbine.

I have had a stainless/synthetic Mini30 for about 20 years. One thing I can tell you is if you heat the barrel up, the group will start walking one you. The receiver and received mounted telescopic sight keep looking at the target but with the pressure points on the barrel, it will just walk.
Was about to sell the gun when I read an add for the Ultimak scope mount. It camps to the barrel and one uses an IER scope. Cured all the problems... I now use a Burris 2-7 scout scope and have no problems making hits it to 300 yards.
That said, if you really want a 7.62x39, buy a bolt gun...there are lots of models now by Ruger, CZ and Howa. They are WAY more accurate and much less expensive...
As to ammo, a friend and his brother-in-law, have killed way over 30 deer with just Burnaul 123 grain HP ammo...all were one shot drops. Another friend in Texas has been using a Ruger bolt gun for 25 years and no telling how many he has racked up....and he sold his .270 after the first three one shot drops.. All were just factory 123s.

Hornady's 123 grain SST is an excellent bullet for your described intentions.

I had a pre ban mini 30, a cz527 carbine, and an AR. All 3 7.62x39mm were great, light and short carbine for woods hunting. The CZ was my favorite but now matter what powder and bullets ,308, 310, 311 diameter, it would not shoot consistent enough groups. In a cz action you can get the most performance bc most data is centered around semi autos, but most are compressed loads. If I used 122gr fmj or hp wolf ammo the gun literally put 3 shots in one single hole!!!. But with other factory ammo and all my handloads I tried it wouldnt shoot, my mini 30 was decent but load! The AR I built was the most accurate I. Last loaf I made used .308 125 nosler bt.

FYI: I believe CZ uses the true 310/311 bore diameter in their rifles. Using cast bullets should give great accuracy, the bullets should expand to fit the bore. Also go with the Leopold CZ 527 rings much better hold with their torx head screws, I had CZs factory ones break with normal tighting, like 5 of them.

i did pick up a old school mini 14 it has the wood top hand guard and some factory 5 round mags, i don't need more than that on tap and the barrel stays much cooler and pretty accurate, i alse drilled out the peep sight to make a ghost ring, this old man likes it!
